In life, it can be easy to rely on others to validate your sense of accomplishment. I mean, how would we know if we are doing good at all if we had nothing else to compare it to?
We all have things that we are proud of and would love to forget, but I believe that recognizing and validating your own strengths will propel you further.
Why is Having a Sense of Accomplishment Important?
One great reason for this is that it gives you a set of truths that you know about yourself.
I find that people with low self-esteem are easily swayed by the good or bad things that others have to say about them. They are unsure of their core values and are defensive when they hear countering arguments.
Getting clear on what you believe and who you are will naturally improve your presence and your confidence when you go into the world.
When you become clear on who you are, you will find the following benefits:
- Increase in self-esteem
- Increase in presence
- You carry less of a mental load
- You attract people who are secure in themselves

Navigating social situations in life is all about trial and error. You receive conflicting signals from everybody, which only makes it more difficult to define your reality.
An example would be someone who is a hard-working student. If you know that you have spent hours studying and practicing for your school work and you have grades that reflect your hard work, you can reasonably conclude that you are a hard-working student.
If you are caught one day lying on the sofa and your parent berates you for your laziness because you are not studying, your confidence will not go out of the window. You have evidence to show yourself that you are not lazy and can look past false accusations and focus on the person’s intentions.
Building evidence for yourself will serve as a barrier between your self-worth and the careless things that others may say about you.
Building Your Sense of Accomplishment
Learn Your Strengths
If you don’t know where to begin to develop your sense of accomplishment, you can try analyzing your strengths.
- Are there tasks that you prefer over others?
- What words would you use to describe yourself in new environments?
- What are you confident to give other people advice on?
These questions can give you an idea of the things that you are capable of doing. When we don’t take the time to look internally, we can miss the details.
Taking the time to truly ponder what we enjoy will lead to more fulfillment.
If you are really stuck you can reach out to your friends and the people that know you for help. You can ask them about your strengths and areas in life that you can improve.
They will have a unique perspective on what you bring to this world and they may even give yo a confidence boost.
Understanding your strengths will direct your focus to the areas of your life that are positive and that build you up.

Find New Ways to Challenge Yourself
Getting the small wins under your belt will push you to do more. New challenges can make you apply your skills in different ways and make you be creative.
You are not a one-trick pony! Having a wide array of experiences will make you more comfortable with discomfort.
If you want to grow, you need to learn how to manage discomfort.
An easy way to begin challenging yourself is to build lists. Some lists that are easy to start are:
- Bucket lists
- New restaurant lists
- Social activities that you’ve never done before.
- Mental health prompt lists
Any of these will get you doing things that you have never tried before.
Practice Mindfulness
Mindfulness is something that I need to actively think about. It has a way of bringing you back to the present and reminding me of how insignificant many of the problems that I face really are.
Active practicing mindfulness will remove you from the noise that you may find in the world and on social media.
Social media can be a lifeless echo chamber that magnifies the worst.
Taking time to build yourself up and bask in your good qualities will help the healing process.
Remember to recharge, there is no need to speed up the wrinkles.
They will come on their own, trust me.
Improve Your Self-esteem
Self esteem plays a large role in developing your sense of accomplishment. You may be concerned about whether or not you deserve something or even struggling with an imposter syndrome.
Either way, we have to be creative to deal with the cards that we are given.
Some things to consider to evaluate your self esteem are:
- Maybe you are confident, but not in the things that truly matter to you
- Maybe you don’t give yourself enough credit
- This is meant to be for you and you alone. The amount of praise that you give yourself is only limited by what you think you deserve. Take what you really need.
Pouring value into yourself is a great way to keep you going and to build your confidence. This is one of the best investments that you can make for yourself.
Building up your self-esteem will benefit goes hand in hand with building your sense of accomplishment.
Set your own terms
You may read this article and see it as some self-aggrandizing venture to fuel the narcissists of the world. I can assure you that narcissists do represent the vast majority of the world’s population.
On Selfishness
Some people will think that enjoying one’s own sense of accomplishment for too long is an act of selfishness.
I wholeheartedly disagree.
I believe that anyone who invalidates or degrades your journey to building your self-worth is attempting to keep your world small.
Everyone may not be ill-intended but fear definitely plays a part. Maybe your dream is something that this person could never fathom doing for their own selves, so they can’t even see the vision.
Staying in the comfort of what you know can provide an illusion of safety, but the regret of wasted potential will catch up with you.
One crucial part of growth and progress is understanding that everyone will not see your vision or be able to come with you. We are all on different paths and you may need to make room for those who will be there for you later in life.
It is not selfish at all to make the effort to understand what you contribute to this world or find out what you do well.
By not evaluating your strengths, you are limiting yourself to what others have to say about you.
Developing your self-belief will fuel your “why” and give you a solid defense against the things that don’t serve you or align with who you are.

Find Your Vision
Most people, especially women, do not take the time to consider their accomplishments. We are lucky if we even acknowledged them ourselves. It is too easy to jump to the next thing that we have to do.
People should participate and contribute to higher causes, but the cause will only go as far as one’s imagination will go. If no one has the confidence to envision something better for themselves and their environment, the cause will likely run stale.
Building your sense of accomplishment based on what you have achieved in the past will only inspire you to think bigger for the future.
Learning to break out of the box of what we think is appropriate for us to expect or believe is one of the biggest obstacles that anyone doing something worth doing will face.
If you create a big enough vision and are bold enough to believe in it, your audience will find you.
The real work is deciding that you, yes you, should be the one to carry out the vision.
Basking in your sense of accomplishment is not to stroke your own ego, but to give you the confidence to do the things that you have dreamed of.
