I know that other people and I have found it difficult to be consistent. We know that the effects of being consistent will push us forward, but taking the initiative at the beginning can keep us from being consistent.
Luckily for you, the effort required at the beginning is not necessary once you get the hang of it.
Being consistent will unlock so many opportunities in your life that were only possible because of the sustained effort that you put in.
Here are my tips that will help you be consistent and reach your goals.
Tips To Be Consistent
1. Figure Out Your Motivation
This is probably one of the most important steps when it comes to figuring out how to be consistent. If you have no motivation to become consistent, your chances of maintaining consistency are very low.
There is usually a reason why we want to be consistent. Maybe it’s because you want to impress yourself, or maybe it’s because you have never been consistent before and you want to reap the benefits.
Having a why behind all of this effort can help you get through the tough times or the times when being consistent is inconvenient.
Questions to ask when you are looking for your why.
- What is the goal?
- What will I be able to accomplish if I am consistent?
- Why is my goal worth the effort?
- How would I feel if I was able to reach my goal
- What excites me about my goal?
Although this is a great first step, not having motivation at the very beginning does not mean you are guaranteed to fail. You can find good tips on how to operate without motivation in this article.
Having something that motivates you is a great way to encourage you to be consistent.
2. Get Organized
An extremely important step to being consistent is to get organized. You are going to need some system to guide you as you work on tasks consistently.
If you do not have a plan going into this journey, it will become insanely hard to be consistent.
To get organized, you will need to:
- Be specific
- Know your goals
- Set your parameters
- Have a plan for recovery
- Document your steps
- Evaluate your process
Having these things in mind as you work toward your goals will keep you on the right track and give you a plan on how to move forward.
Getting organized is the hard work required for you to be consistent, especially if you have never been consistent before.
If being consistent is not your default practice in your life, establishing a plan to help you succeed will put you much farther than if you decide to wing it.

3. Set Your Goal(s)
This part may come easy to you as most people tend to have a reason they want to be consistent. Even if you want to be consistent for its own sake, you may still be encouraged by the feeling you would receive by reaching this accomplishment.
Setting goals can be as simple or complicated as you would like it to be. Setting goals is an essential part to be consistent.
To get you started on setting goals, you can answer these questions:
- What do I want to accomplish?
- How can I measure my progress?
- What do I want in the future, that I could work towards today?
You can even set goals related to your consistency to push you along.
For example, if your goal is to exercise more you can make doing a certain number of push-ups a day. You would be progressing in your exercise journey and you would also be improving in your efforts to be consistent.
I recommend you set goals that are very attainable. Set goals that will challenge you, and are simple enough to motivate you.
4. Establish your Reward

This is the fun part. When you first start, rewards are a great motivator to be consistent. They give you a tangible thing to show your effort.
For example, if you do something for one month straight, you might buy yourself a book you have been eyeing. This is an example of how you could use rewards to promote your consistency.
You can set the boundaries on your journey to be consistent, but you will find the incorporation of rewards to work to your advantage.
Rewards give you something to look forward to and to show for your work. You can enjoy yourself guilt-free if you accomplish everything you set to beforehand.
Some things that you can reward yourself with are:
These may or may not be your cup of tea, but I as a person working on consistency would love to receive any of these things.
Note: Rewards only work if they are different from what you actually do and if you have self-discipline.
If you make your reward an hour of screentime, but you spent the day looking at your phone already, your reward did not motivate you.
With rewards, do not set yourself up for failure. These systems only work as well as the people who use them do.

5. Create a Routine
One thing that I have found makes consistency a ton easier is to make a routine out of the habits you are trying to build. If you follow a routine so that the task that you want to be consistent in becomes natural, you have a much higher chance of sticking to it.
Routines are great because you can batch the task that you want to complete. For example, adults usually leave their homes to go to work every day. It is much easier when you return to change into your workout gear and go for a walk because you were already changing your clothes in the first place.
If you set this routine, then you will be getting more exercise because you chose to correlate these two items.
A routine can direct you toward your goals because you can customize it to serve you. Routines make it easy to track all of the things that you want to do.
Your routine can be documented using:
- To Do List
- Planner
- Post-It Notes
- Notes App
- Planning App
Any of the following will make it easier for you to follow your routine.
Lack of consistency can be caused by a lack of a routine. When you get into the habit of doing the same things in a similar way every day, the tasks can become natural.
I hope that you are encouraged to make and follow a routine that will help you be consistent.
6. Be Kind to Yourself
This is a part that is necessary to remind yourself each time you make an effort to be consistent. If being consistent is not natural to you, you are probably going to fail the first few attempts.
We all are looking for a way to improve our lives by using systems to help us run more efficiently.
Being consistent can be hard work, especially with all of the distractions that seem eager to throw us off at every corner.
If you set the expectations early that you are new at something and you will probably fail, you remove a lot of the pressure that comes with a routine.
You don’t want to get so discouraged that you cause yourself to quit altogether.
Be proud that you have come as far as you have. The effort that you have put toward being consistent will propel you forward.
You are already better than you were last week because of the decision you made to improve your life. Good job!

7. Consider the Possibility of Failure
When trying anything new, it is not logical to expect to be perfect at first.
We make the possibility of failure much scarier in our minds and that can deter us from taking risks. Failure is something that should be embraced. Failure is a great teacher and the emotions we feel when we do fail can be great reminders.
Perfecting something takes practice and repetition and you may not succeed every time. Flexibility is a requirement to be consistent.
You have to give yourself space to make mistakes and to learn. Do not set such high expectations at the beginning of this process. They can and will cause more harm than good.
Getting back up after you fall is what is most important and that attitude will help you be consistent and stay consistent.
It takes practice and time to be consistent. You are allowed to set your pace for journey. There are many benefits to being consistent and I encourage you all to try. You could open the door to many opportunities if you learn the discipline and patience that is required to be consistent.
