This article is all about the learning mindset.
Sometimes, when you get into the routine of life, it just gets stale. When you can predict everything that will happen next or maybe you face the same challenges over and over again.
Our bodies can get accustomed to living the life that we live so we become comfortable and complacent. This may last for a while, but it is only a matter of time before our minds become restless.
It is extremely important to engage our minds with new stimuli and to learn new things. Learning does not stop when you get your diploma or even your degree. If anything, it is only the beginning.
What is the Learning Mindset?
The Learning Mindset describes the mentality that is used to seek out knowledge and to find the lesson in every opportunity. It is extremely important because learning is what keeps you active and engaged with the world.
If we compare modern society to a river, you are a fish and progress would be the current. If you are constantly adapting and engaging with the current, you can move quickly and make more progress.
If you stop learning or moving as a fish, then you will be carried by the current anyway, but you may have a tougher time moving through the river as you are at the mercy of the current and all of the other fish.
You can see how it would be valuable to apply yourself in maintaining your ability to learn. You can reinvigorate your life by simply looking to learn
Areas to Manage the Learning Mindset
1. The Learning Mindset in Academia
The first place that your brain probably jumped to when you read the term “The Learning Mindset” is in academics. This does not need to be in formal education.
It benefits you greatly to use the learning mindset here because it can be a source of inspiration. Having a learning mindset is a great inspiration for carrying you through your studies. You will find your courses to be much more valuable if you show up because you want to learn rather than achieve the reward on the other side.
In formal education, you will find that every course that you are required to take is not necessarily interesting to you or useful. Unfortunately, required courses are not so adjustable. You can use the learning mindset to pinpoint the areas that are interesting to you in every class you take.
If you find can identify the parts of the curriculum that inspire you, you can build out a plan from there to help you succeed in the course.
Academia also provides many opportunities for you to learn that don’t relate to studying. For example, there are often clubs or organizations for you to join. You may have to work while you are attending school, but you could participate in extracurricular activities.
All of these activities present opportunities for you to learn life skills and apply these skills to help you progress in the world.
2. The Learning Mindset in Your Career
Your job will have a huge influence on your learning and the challenges that you will face as an adult. In the United States, we traditionally dedicate 40 hours per week to working at a job.
This is too much time to not be engaged or inspired by what you are doing.
Companies like to encourage employees to learn and increase their performance with incentives such as raises and promotions. I think that you should seek to learn and challenge yourself for your own benefit.
If you can get in the door at one company and take advantage of the opportunities that they present, you can leverage your knowledge and experience to earn more at that company or elsewhere. Please do not be afraid to take your skills elsewhere, if your job is not serving you.
Every job is not going to be your passion but if nothing else, you should be able to take away learning lessons or find opportunities for you to grow. Some of the more trying jobs are the ones that keep you accountable for the progress that you need to make.
The learning mindset will keep you from being discouraged too long as you know that you are growing into the person you want to become.
3. Relationships and the Learning Mindset
One thing that we will never master is relationships. There is an infinite amount of knowledge to be had from relationships alone.
There are so many categories that you can choose to work on such as your relationships with colleagues, family, strangers, audiences, or even your relationship with yourself.
Seeking to grow in your relationships can be beneficial to your mental, physical, and social health. Learning to work with people and inspire them to do what you want them to do will make your life so much easier.
Learning to communicate effectively is one of the most important skills that you could ever achieve. Cracking the code of people can be a daunting task, but once you figure it out, you are golden.
4. Investing with the Learning Mindset
Another area of your life that would greatly benefit from the learning mindset is your finances. Specifically investing. Once you have the basics down and set a solid foundation regarding your finances, you open up the opportunity for you to expand your growth and money.
It won’t take much effort on your part to learn the basics of what creates a strong financial foundation. Once you learn to budget, build an emergency fund, figure out your retirement, etc., you are good.
As you go deeper into personal finance, you learn that your money will not best serve you inside a bank account. You eventually need to use your money in a way that would bring more money back to you if you seek to build wealth.
This is why investing is so important.
There are so many ways that you could use to increase your wealth with your investments. It is imperative to know that any time you choose to invest, you are taking on a risk with your money. Your investments will not always be profitable and you will lose money.
However, down markets do not last forever, and there are plenty of chances to make better decisions and recover. This is where the learning mindset is put to work.
5. The Learning Mindset and Your Health
Just like you can be financially literate, the same applies to health. Health literacy is the foundation of understanding your body and your health.
New things are being discovered about the human body and how it works every year. There is always more to learn about maintaining your health and increasing the longevity of your life.
Using the learning mindset here can help you find new ways to engage your body to improve your health overall. You don’t want to be on the side where you are trying to fix health issues. You would do much better to act preventatively before there is an issue at all.
This can apply to mental health as well. You can always seek out new ways to maintain balance in your mind. Finding new ways to engage your mind and bring it back to the center when you are tested will keep you sane. Also, once you gain these skills, no one can take them away from you.
